Access Floor Standards

For the last 25 years there has been a ‘British Standard’ for access floors called the PSA Specification. At first glance this can seem complex but in terms of load carrying capability, there are actually only four UK standards: light, medium, heavy and extra heavy. These are arranged vertically in that each grade will comply with any grades which are lower in the scale.

Because the PSA was a British standard, a new EU standard was created via the “European Committee for Standardization”, the European specification EN12825 (this is now also recognised as a British Standard BSEN12825). The EU specification allows for up to 72 performance standards!

Not only are there many more standards, they are also harder to understand. They are not arranged vertically, which means there is great potential for misunderstanding and as well as confusion as to what is needed.

It is also now the case that the manufacturer’s own testing and self certification must be relied on. Evaluation testing under EN12825 replaces independent testing and certification, which is no longer available. It is therefore crucial to choose your access floor supplier with care, to ensure you get the right access floor for your needs.
