UFAD stands for Under Floor Air Distribution, and, alongside access floors, has become increasingly popular both locally and globally over the past few years. The system works by beginning the distribution of air flow from the void underneath the access floor, and allowing it to disperse through grills to the rest of the workspace. In using this method as opposed to an overhead cooling system, clean air is delivered directly to where it is required, without added heat and air pollutants. With the overhead cooling system, as the air is continually circling the workspace from top to bottom, more heat and pollutants are added, and consequently the air may begin to feel less clean.

In using the UFAD system, there is no need for a ceiling void in which an over head cooling system would be located. This would be maximising the workspace, as there would be more room. In comparison with an overhead system, significantly less pressure is needed to supply air to the space as the concentrations of air in the lower void are much less that the higher. Therefore, as opposed to the air ventilating through dilution, it is ventilated through displacement; allowing a much better indoor quality of air.
