Raised Floor Heating System

Following on from our article about the importance of thermal management of the raised floor, we will now explore underfloor heating systems designed for use with raised access floors.

Systems such as Osma’s underfloor heating device have been developed. The system, which also provides cooling, works by plugging injection-mounded brackets directly into the pedestal caps of the raised floor. The top surface of the brackets is in direct contact with the underside of the galvanised floor panels when they have been fitted.

How is a raised floor heated?

When the brackets and heating modules are in place, continuous lengths of 15 mm polybutylene pipe are pushed into channels preformed in the top surface of the modules to form heating/cooling circuits. The tails of the pipe circuits are then brought together and connected to a distribution manifold. When cooling capacity needs to be increased locally, cassettes can be installed in the floor void.

The design is such that sufficient space remains between the rows of heating modules to provide good access to services in the floor void. Modules and pipe can be repositioned if re-zoning or alteration of the system becomes necessary.
