The Access Floor: A History

Before the days of the access floor, flooring was constructed by laying a concrete slab, applying a sand cement screed, and then allowing this to fully cure before the installation of the broadloom carpet. This was before the 1980’s, however during this decade the access floor began to make a name for itself and became increasingly popular. However, despite this popularity, they were still being installed on concrete slabs.

As the access floor developed and became more popular it also became more sophisticated: namely, it had an under structure that was able to cope with the demands of the construction industry. It was adjustable and lockable to specific heights and levels.

The time had come to establish a more efficient method of construction. Studies showed that using an access floor not only provided a cable management system and a flat and level platform for carpets but could also reduce construction periods by at least two weeks per floor (that is, the period required to lay and cure a wet sand cement screed).

Fieldmans Access Floors Ltd has been installing access floors for over twenty years and have kept up to date with every aspect of their development. For more information, please call 0208 462 7100 or email Enquiries@Fieldmans.com.
