Raised flooring is usually required by office buildings that use a lot of IT data centres, to carry cables, wiring, electrical supply and sometimes air conditioning or chilled water pipes. Additional structural support and lighting are often provided when a floor is raised enough for a person to crawl or even walk beneath.

How is raised flooring created?

Raised flooring consists of a metal grid framework or under structure of adjustable-height legs that provide support for individual floor panels which are usually 60×60cm in size. The height of the legs depends on the volume of cables and other equipment underneath, but usually they are at least 15cm tall. The raised flooring panels are normally made of steel, and there is a variety of flooring finishes to suit the application such as carpets, marble, and high-pressure laminates for use in computer rooms and laboratories.

Issues with Some Raised Flooring Fitters

A potential issue with raised flooring is that since the flooring panels are rarely removed once equipment has been installed, the space below them is rarely cleaned. This results in fluff and other debris settling. Smoke detectors under the raised flooring can be triggered by workers disturbing the dust, resulting in false alarms. Ensure your raised flooring is properly fitted and maintained to avoid such problems.
