Why install a raised floor?

The basic science and engineering of the raised floor was fully developed in the 1960s and has been modified and modernised over time. The raised floor has become synonymous with data centres in particular – to the extent that one common definition of a data centre is that it is a computing space with a raised floor.

Why has the raised floor proved so enduringly popular?

Presentation is a key element: for many companies having a smart-looking data centre is an important part of facility tours for key customers. A raised floor looks sharp and professional, and conveys the right image for the company.

Another reason companies invest in raised flooring is the flexibility offered by raised floor cooling designs. The raised floor provides some opportunity to move air vent tiles around in order to achieve a desired temperature profile. This is more difficult in a ducted system using overhead air pipes.

Over recent years there has been a shift from a smaller number of larger IT devices to a larger number of smaller IT devices, resulting in an increase in the number of branch circuits per square metre in the modern data centre. A raised floor provides the ideal location for running these branch circuits, as it negates the need for overhead distribution.
